tumblr.com is the best social media platform because it is the most human.
When you lose yourself in the explore page of Instagram or flick endlessly into the depths of TikTok videos, you are only going deeper into an algorithm’s reflection of yourself. Introspection is good; self-obsession is self-defeating.
Losing yourself on tumblr, on the other hand, is losing yourself in someone else. Their interests. Their taste. Their sense of humor (or lack of it). Tapping on someone else’s profile is a first date, and it feels real. At this point, everyone knows Instagram is fake, and nobody has every questioned whether TikTok dances are “real life,” even if you could argue the world would be better with more spontaneous dancing.
Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Youtube… they all give us more of ourselves. The weight of all their computing machinery bears down on our mind, trying to stay a single step ahead—what do you want to see next, screen-slave?
tumblr is too poorly run, too chaotic, too difficult to use. It lacks the sophistication to make itself into what you want. On tumblr, the user is still in charge. On tumblr, you can still learn about other people. You might be repulsed, but you might learn a little empathy as well, or at the very least you might learn that other people are different from ourselves.
